Every girl needs a little – or not so little – black dress, and whether you’re tall or short, curvy or slim, the black dress is a staple part of all of our wardrobes. I love my black dress – I have the Eddie dress and it looks amazing dressed up with chunky costume jewellery for a party; or if I’m trying to be a bit more formal I like to add my Swarovski sparkles and some stunning heels.
Way to make an entrance, Eloise!
Coco Chanel is credited with the invention of the ‘LBD’ – before the 20th century black dresses had only been popular for mourning. Chanel’s design made the idea of wearing black fashionable and women everywhere have agreed ever since. It was enthusiastically worn by some of the most fashionable icons of the time – Wallis Simpson and Josephine Baker, and they did what we’ve all done ever since, dressed it up with diamante when a posh frock was required, and added touches of style like feathers, asymmetrical necklines and anything else that made it a bit different. The black dress was here to stay!
The LBD probably had its finest hour when Audrey Hepburn owned the look in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The Givenchy frock was floor length and worn with super-sophisticated evening gloves in the opening credits, so really it wasn’t that little, but the iconic image catapulted the LBD into a league of its own in the style stakes and by the 1960s every woman had to have one.
Now, the LBD is more about the colour than the style, and a girl’s favourite little black dress can be as long or short as she likes! It can even be split down the sides and fastened with safety pins if you’re Liz Hurley in 1994.
